After ending her relationship with Filippo Melodia, a man with mafia ties, Franca was kidnapped, beaten, and raped. For eight horrifying days, she was held captive and told she could “restore her honor” — if she married her attacker.
Because that was the law.
Under Article 544 of the Italian Penal Code, a rapist could erase his crime by marrying his victim — a so-called “rehabilitating marriage.”
But Franca refused.
She came home, faced her community, and said no to the man who violated her and to a system built on shame. Her courage sparked outrage, fear, and finally — a movement.
Her family was harassed, their land set on fire, their name disgraced. But Franca stood firm. She took her rapist to court. And in 1966, she won.
Franca Viola became the first woman in Italy to reject “rehabilitating marriage” and publicly fight for justice.
Her stand forced a nation to question its laws, its traditions, and its treatment of women.
Years later, in 1981, Italy finally abolished the law.
Franca never sought fame. She married a man who loved her for who she was — not for what she had survived. She lived quietly, but her defiance echoed across generations.
Because of her, countless women found their voices.
